Hop on - Hop off: The most enviromentally friendly adventure in the Lyngenfjord region

Would you like to get close to the locals and at the same time travel in an environmentally friendly way? Experience the Lyngenfjord region by taking the regional buses 150 Tromsø - Alta or 160 Tromsø - Storslett. Plan your trip based on our itinerary below and the bus schedule. When you are exploring the Lyngenfjord region in Northern Norway, taking the bus is a good alternative to renting a car. It's easy, reliable and comfortable. Sit back and enjoy the view!

Bus 150 Tromsø - Alta - Tromsø

Suggested itinerary

  • The bus departs Prostneset in Tromsø at 16.00 and drives to Breivikeidet from where you take the ferry to Svensby, which is the first stop. 

  • The next day 15:25 or 17:10, catch the bus to Lyngseidet. The bus trip takes approx. 20 minutes.
    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Lyngseidet
    • 🏃‍♀️ In Lyngseidet, we recommend a visit to Aurora Spirit Distillery, which is the world's northernmost whisky distillery and is situated approx. 10 km from Lyngseidet (40-minute bike ride). Rent hiking equipment at ElektroSport and go on nice hikes or bike rides in the area. 
  • Take the ferry from Lyngseidet to Olderdalen ⛴️. The ferry departs about every two hours and is free of charge for travellers without a car. Ferry schedule
    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Olderdalen
    • 🏃‍♀️ In Olderdalen, you can go on hikes with spectacular views. There is a grocery store, as well as a kiosk (Dittis) at the ferry landing serving fast food.
  • From Olderdalen to Nordmannvik, it's only 10 km and the bus ride takes approx. 15 minutes. 
    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Nordmannvik
    • 🏃‍♀️ In Nordmannvik, there are no shops or restaurants, so we recommend shopping in Olderdalen before departure. The owner of Lyngen Fjordbuer in Nordmannvik is a nature guide and knows the surrounding area well. He can give you tips about the best hiking trips. Lyngen Fjordbuer has boats for rent.
  • From Nordmannvik to Djupvik/Spåkenes, the bus ride is approx. 10 minutes.
    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Spåkenes
    • At Lyngen North, you can sleep in a glass igloo with a panoramic view of the Lyngen Alps. Lyngen North's restaurant, Restaurant Solvind, serves local specialities with a twist - a mix of the world's food cultures. Click here to view the menu.
    • At Spåkenes, you can visit the ruins of a World War II coastal fort and experience the rich bird life. Around 60 different bird species have been observed here. Click  here to read more about Spåkenes.

  • The next stop is Sørkjosen, only 30 minutes by bus from Djupvik.
    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Sørkjosen
    • In Sørkjosen, we recommend visiting Kronebutikken and Bærkokeriet.
    • At Storslett, which is a short drive from Sørkjosen, there are several shops, cafes and other services. We especially reccommend a visit to Bios Cafe, which serves quality food made from local produce. Click here to read more about Bios Cafe. 

This itinerary can be combined with a detour to Skjervøy or you can continue on bus 160 all the way to Alta.

Bus 160 Tromsø - Storslett - Tromsø 

Suggested itinerary

  • The bus departs Prostneset in Tromsø at 15.00 and heads to Nordkjosbotn before arriving in Skibotn, which is the first stop.

    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Skibotn
    • 🏃‍♀️ In Skibotn there is a grocery store and restaurant/cafes. Skibotn offers nice hiking trails and is a paradise for bike lovers! Skibotn Stifestival (Skibotn mountain biking festival) is an annual event each August.
    • We reccommend visiting the historic Skibotn Marketplace, which was the largest and most important market in North Troms. Read more here.
  • The next day you continue to Manndalen, which is known for its Sami culture and history.
  • From Manndalen to Birtavarre, it's  a short bus ride (approx. 20 minutes).
    • 🏃‍♀️ Birtavarre is the gateway to Halti, Finland's highest mountain. In Birtavarre, you will find the ruins of the old mining community in Ankerlia,  the popular Gorsa bridge and great opportunities for hiking. During the summer, you can bungee jump off the Gorsa bridge.
    • 🏕️ There is no accommodation in Birtavarre, bring a tent!
    • Visit Holmenes Coastal Sami farm, which dates to around 1850. A visit here will provide an insight into the contrasts between then and now!
  • From Birtavarre to Olderdalen, it's a 20-minute bus ride and the bus departs several times each day. 
    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Olderdalen
    • 🏃‍♀️ In Olderdalen, you can go on hikes and skibtouring and cross-country skiing during the winter. There is a grocery store and a kiosk (Dittis) on the ferry dock that serves fast food. 
  • From Olderdalen to Nordmannvik, it's only 10 km and the bus ride takes only 15 minutes. 
    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Nordmannvik
    • 🏃‍♀️ In Nordmannvik, there are no shops or restaurants, so we recommend shopping in Olderdalen before departure. The owner of Lyngen Fjordbuer in Nordmannvik is a naturguide and knows the surrounding area well, and can give you tips for the best hiking trips. You can rent a boat and go fishing or go ski touring and cross-country skiing during the winter.
  • From Nordmannvik to Djupvik/Spåkenes, the bus ride is approx. 10 minutes.
