Hop on hop off - the most enviromentally friendly roundtrip in the Lyngenfjord region

Would you like to get close to the locals and at the same time travel in an environmentally friendly way? Experience the Lyngenfjord region by taking the regional busses 150 Tromsø - Alta or 160 Tromsø -Storslett. Plan your trip based on our itinerary below and the bus schedule. Taking the bus is a good alternative to renting a car for exploring the Lyngenfjord region in Northern Norway, easy, reliable and comfortable. Sit back and enjoy the view!

Bus 150 Tromsø - Alta - Tromsø

Suggested itinerary

  • The bus departs Prostneset in Tromsø 4 PM, and drive towards Breivikeidet from where you take the ferry to Svensby which is the first stop. 

  • The next day 03:25 PM or 05:10 PM you take the bus to Lyngseidet. The bus trip takes approximately 20 minutes.
    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Lyngseidet
    • 🏃‍♀️ In Lyngseidet we recommend a visit to Aurora Spirit Distilleri, which is the northernmost Whisky distilleri and is situated approximately 10 kilometers from Lyngseidet. (40 minute bikeride) Rent hiking equipment at ElektroSport and go on nice hikes, or bike rides in the area. 
  • Take the ferry from Lyngseidet to Olderdalen ⛴️. The ferry departs about every two hours, and is free of charge for travellers without a car. Ferry schedule
    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Olderdalen
    • 🏃‍♀️ In Olderdalen you can go on hikes with spectacular views. There is a grocery store, and on the ferry dock there is a kiosk (Dittis) that serves fast food.
  • From Olderdalen to Nordmannvik it is only 10 kilometers, and the bus ride takes approximately15 minutes. 
    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Nordmannvik
    • 🏃‍♀️ In Nordmannvik there are no shops or restaurants, so you have to shop in Olderdalen before departure. The owner of Lyngen Fjordbuer in Nordmannvik is a naturguide and knows the surrounding area well, and can give you tips for the best hikingtrips. Lyngen Fjordbuer has boats for rent.
  • From Nordmannvik to Djupvik/Spåkenes the bussride is approximately 10 minutes.
    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Spåkenes
    • At Lyngen North you can sleep in a glass iglo with a panoramic view of the Lyngen Alps. Lyngen North has their own restaurant - Restaurant Solvind, which serves local specialities with a twist - a mix of the worlds foodcultures. You can find the menu here
    • At Spåkenes you can visit the ruins of an on coastal fort from World War 2, and experience the rich bird life. Around 60 different bird species have been observed here. Read more about Spåkenes here
    • 🏃‍♀️ Get one of the best views of the Lyngen Alps from Dalberget or Storhaugen. Find the hiking description to Dalberget here
  • Next stop is Sørkjosen, only 30 minutes by bus from Djupvik.
    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Sørkjosen
    • In Sørkjosen we recommend a visit to Kronebutikken and Bærkokeriet.
    • At Storslett a short drive from Sørkjosen there are several shops, cafees and other services. We especially reccommend a visit to Bios cafe, which serves quality food made of local produce. Read more about Bios cafe her.

This itinerary can be combined with a detour to Skjervøy, or you can continue with bus 160 all the way to Alta.

Buss 160 Tromsø - Storslett - Tromsø 

Suggested itinerary

  • The bus departs Prostneset in Tromsø 3 PM, and heads towards Nordkjosbotn before you arrive in Skibotn which is the first stop.

    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Skibotn
    • 🏃‍♀️ In Skibotn there is a grocery store and restaurante/cafees. Skibotn offer nice hiking trails, and is a paradise for the bike lover! Skibotn Stifestival (Skibotn trail festival) is arranged i august every year.
    • We reccommend a visit to Skibotn Marketplace which was the largest and most important market in North Troms. Read more here.
  • The next day you continue towards Manndalen. Manndalen is known for its sami culture and history.
  • From Manndalen to Birtavarre there is a short busride, approximately 20 minutes.
    • 🏃‍♀️ Birtavarre is the gate to Halti - Finlands highest mountain. In Birtavarre you find the ruins of the old mining communit in Ankerlia, and the popular Gorsa bridge, as well as nice hiking opportunities. During the summer you can bungeejump from the Gorsa bridge.
    • 🏕️ There is no accommodation in Birtavarre, bring a tent!
    • Visit Holmenes coastal sami farm, The farm dates to around 1850, and a visit here will provide an insight into the contrasts between then and now!
  • From Birtavarre to Olderdalen there is a 20 minute bus ride, and the bus departs several times during the day. 
    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Olderdalen
    • 🏃‍♀️ In Olderdalen you can go on hikes, and during the winter skitouring and cross country skiing. There is a grocery store, and on the ferry dock there is a kiosk (Dittis) that serves fast food. .
  • From Olderdalen to Nordmannvik it is only 10 kilometers, and the bus ride takes only 15 minutes. 
    • 🛏️ Accommodation in Nordmannvik
    • 🏃‍♀️ In Nordmannvik there are no shops or restaurants, so you have to shop in Olderdalen before departure. You can rent a boat and go fishing, and during the winter ski touring and cross country skiing.
