The village market – a culinary festival!

The annual village market (Landsbymarkedet) in Storslett each autumn gathers local food producers and noted chefs to present the best tastes from throughout the Lyngenfjord region. Welcome to a culinary festival as the Polar Night approaches!
The Lyngenfjord region has a well-earned reputation for good produce and competent food producers. Every autumn, in late October or early November, it’s time for the annual village market (Landsbymarkedet). Visitors can get their hands on a wide range of high quality, locally produced and award-winning products – all gathered in the same place.

Authentic food festival
The market takes place in the heart of the national park village Storslett. As well as a market tent with sales booths and culinary theatre, there are concerts, courses and lectures at the various eateries.

The village chefs
Each year the village market has its own village chef. One of Norway’s best chefs, Gunnar Jensen, had the prestigious title in 2017, while in 2018 it was the turn of celebrity chef and MasterChef judge Kjartan Skjeldes. 

Long traditions
Having a market in the autumn is far from bring a new tradition in the Lyngenfjord region. People from the fjords and mountains in the east and west have met each other at the mouth of the Reisa river for several hundred years. Twice each year, the historic marketplace was filled with goods, villagers and visitors.

Encounters between cultures
Throughout history, markets in the Lyngenfjord region have involved encounters between people and cultures. Products were sold and swapped between Sami, Kven and villagers. Goods such as reindeer, poultry, reindeer hides, leather clothes, wadmal, fish, tobacco, spirits, salt, flour, butter, eggs, iron and steel products changed hands and got new owners.
